Spooky Season Movie Magic: My Favorite Whimsical, Gothic & Witchy Halloween Watchlist
Welcome to the garden! As October rolls in, there is nothing I love more than dimming the lights, lighting a few autumn-scented candles, wrapping myself in a cozy blanket, and entering a realm of stop-motion magic, gothic romance, and spellbinding vibes.
Halloween has always held the absolute biggest piece of my heart. Ever since I was an angsty, wannabe-witch teenager spending my October nights writing tortured journal entries, collecting crystals, and trying to learn how to cast spells in my bedroom, this holiday has felt like home.
That brooding, enchanted energy never really left me. It just morphed into a deep love for all things whimsical, spooky, and autumnal. If your aesthetic leans a little moody, a little dark fantasy, and very spellbinding, you are in the right place. Today, I am sharing my all-time favorite Halloween movies that I rewatch every single year to get into the spirit.
The Gothic & Whimsical Stop-Motion Wonders
There’s something so nostalgic and artistic about stop-motion animation. The painstaking detail and moody color palettes feel like stepping straight into a dark fairy tale.
1. Coraline - Coraline holds such a special place in my heart. My sisters and i have been watching Coraline since the moment it came out. The vibrant indigo night skies, the glowing enchanted garden, and the lingering creepiness of the Other World make it an absolute masterpiece. It strikes the ultimate balance between dark fantasy and childhood wonder. Plus, those button eyes never fail to give just the right amount of autumn chills!
2. Corpse Bride - Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride is the definition of gothic romanticism. It is the ultimate cult-classic Haloween movie. The contrast between the dull, gray living world and the colorful, lively underworld is so visually breathtaking. Between the haunting piano melodies and Emily’s tragic beauty, it’s a bittersweet, whimsical staple
The Witchy & Spellbinding Classics
Is it really spooky season without a little spellwork, sisterhood, and kitchen magic? (My teenage self would definitely say no!)
3. The Craft - For a darker, 90s-alt witchy vibe, The Craft is unbeatable. The leather jackets, candlelit rituals on the beach, and iconic lines ("We are the weirdos, mister") make this the ultimate film for when you want to channel your inner high priestess. It is edgy, atmospheric, and full of vintage witchy inspiration. Put it this way: my Catholic mother absolutely hated when my friends and I turned this on.
4. Practical Magic - Is there anything more dreamy than the Owens family home? I still strive to make my home have the same vibe as theirs. Practical Magic is the ultimate comfort movie. Between the sprawling coastal Victorian house, the herb-filled kitchen, midnight margaritas, and the cozy power of sisterhood, it feels like a warm hug wrapped in a spell. It is impossible to watch this without wanting to brew herbal potions and dance around the kitchen.
Dark Fantasy & Magical Escapism
5. Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban - While the entire Harry Potter series is comfort viewing, Prisoner of Azkaban is peak Halloween energy. Directed by Alfonso Cuarón, this film embraced dark, moody tones, foggy grounds, giant pumpkins outside Hagrid’s hut, and atmospheric magic. It feels like a crisp autumn night captured on film.
6. Dark Shadows - Tim Burton’s campy, gothic trip back to the 1970s is such a fun watch! Barnabas Collins waking up in 1972, the crumbling seaside mansion, and witchy rivalries make Dark Shadows a delightfully quirky, visual feast for October.
What about you? Were you an angsty teenage witch too, or did you take a different path to spooky season? What movies are on your mandatory October rewatch list?
With love & magic,
Sam 🌿✨
